Summer Enrichment Camps
At Spring Forward, we believe that summer is a time to grow, learn, explore, and have fun. With this in mind, we developed literacy and STEM-focused summer enrichment camps that help combat the academic “summer slide” experienced by many kids over the summer months. Over our six-week program, kids are engaged in a variety of activities through our various program partners. We take weekly field trips to places like Nahant Marsh, the Figge Art Museum, the Putnam Museum, and more. In addition to our fun and engaging lessons, campers work hard on at least two hours of focused literacy work every week, with a program goal of maintaining or gaining reading levels over the summer.
Kids on Campus
Summer is a time to have fun, learn and go on adventures. That’s what kids at Spring Forward’s Kids on Campus are doing this summer. In this program’s inaugural year, children entering sixth and seventh grade are being introduced to the college experience as they spend mornings at Augustana College’s campus participating in activities led by the Biology, Geography, Art, and Information Technology Services. Students begin their days with breakfast before participating in various lessons from Augustana’s faculty. In the afternoon, they head to Longfellow Elementary, where they enjoy lunch and literacy-focused activities led by qualified Spring Forward staff.
After School Programs
Spring Forward after-school programs are held up to four days a week at six sites, serving kindergarten through third grade students in the Rock Island-Milan School District. Activities at each site include an after-school snack, homework help, instruction and enrichment, physical activity and a meal at the end of the day. We enroll students in collaboration with their teachers, focusing on struggling readers in first through third grade. One of our top program goals is to have all program participants reading at or above grade level.
Family Literacy Program
Spring Forward is entering its third year of offering family literacy for immigrant and refugee families at Church of Peace in Rock Island. Our classes for Adult English Learners are designed to teach students literacy and life skills in an engaging, compassionate setting. The people enrolled in this program have come from many different countries and speak many different languages, including Burmese, French, Karen, Swahili, Kirundi and Arabic. The program also offers an onsite early learner program for preschool aged children, so parents can have a safe, nurturing environment for their children while they attend class.
